2 July 2012 — Rotary International Immediate Past President Kalyan Banerjee

Welcome to the 2012-2013 Rotary Year!  Here is a very quick baseline to show us where we start as of July 1.

We are not yet chartered as an official Rotary Club.

We are now in District 5280, and our District Governor is Lew Bertrand.  As we introduce Lew, we cannot thank PDG Tom Hardy enough for his unwavering support of our building process during his year 2011-2012 as Governor of District 5260.

We are an extremely active (provisional) Rotary Club with more ongoing or planned projects than most Clubs around town.

We have more members than 17 of the approximately 60 Clubs in District 5280.  But we must get to that magic number of 25 all-stars and become official and then have access to tons of Rotary resources.

We started the Rotary Year with what turned out to be a ridiculously successful experiment, our One More Item Food Drive, in partnership with the Rotary Club of North Hollywood.  I will update this space with the final results of the July 1 event, but we gathered a lot of valuable donations from the generous shoppers at Gelson’s in Sherman Oaks and in North Hollywood.  If you are one of the few Club members who had to miss the event, you missed a ton of fun, and it only gets better when we learn how many families we helped.

[NOTE ON TUESDAY, 3 JULY: 1,737 pounds of food (nearly 900 kg); Will Hernandez, Director of Valley Food Bank, estimates that means 350 families, approximately 1,300 people, will eat. Along with some cash donations we took in, it is a very big total for a one-day event.]

On Tuesday, 26 June 2011, Rotary international President Kalyan Banerjee was kind enough to take half an hour out of one of his final five days in office to speak with our Rotary Club.  When you consider the schedule he and his wife Binota kept during the 2011-2012 Rotary Year, and the demands of even his final five days as RI President, it was a world-class privilege that he gave us this precious time.

As we move into the new Rotary Year, with the privilege of working with new RI President Sakuji Tanaka and continue our worldwide mission of Peace Through Service, we thank now Immediate Past President Kalyan Banerjee for helping us to Reach Within and Embrace Humanity.  Please enjoy this rare Club-level interview with a sitting RI President.

It is so nice to hear the president of RI speak so frankly and personally with us. Such a wonderful interview. Great work getting the President to visit our E-Club, Mel! The Stanley Cup, then the president of RI. What’s next?? :)

  5. The President’s personal Rotary club sounds like a group of movers and shakers. I guess the message is big ideas breed big results.
