7 November 2011 — Finding Solutions, RC New York and 9/11

After you view/hear/read the program and this week’s features, please join the Discussion Group and post your comments by clicking on “Add a reply.” (This is also how our E-Club verifies attendance for Club Members and visiting Rotarians making up a meeting with us.)

FIRST, some Club Announcements this week. We are very pleased to welcome RAFFI DONOYAN, PATTY GIVANT, and ROWENA HECK to the team officially. All three will become brand-spanking-new Rotarian upon the chartering of our E-Club. (No actual spanking involved.)

Also, we will continue to hold our monthly in-person gatherings on the first Sunday of each month, at 12:00 noon in The Fireplace Room at the centrally-located Denny’s in Sherman Oaks, on Sepulveda Boulevard at the SW corner of Burbank Boulevard. January’s gathering will instead be on 8 January, for a reason which will be very clear if you just subtract seven from eight.

At the November gathering, we reached a consensus to run one food drive each quarter for Valley Food Bank, to continue our donations to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission (a carload of donations will be delivered to CEO Ken Craft on the morning of 7 November already), to use part of the December gathering for a training on the presentation of the International Mother Language Day project so many Club Members can go to schools this February and March and have some fun teaching the kids, and to look for partnerships with local organizations to help support charities devoted to issues like cancer and juvenile diabetes awareness and research.

In international news, we will also begin the process of working with the Rotary Club of The Great Rift Valley, in Nakuru, Kenya, on a project to providing musical instruments and instruction to adult polio victims in Kenya and to underprivileged children in the San Fernando Valley, creating two separate bands or orchestras which hopefully can play together someday.

And for this week, Rotary International has just released this moving film on the solutions provided by the Rotary Club of New York (the sixth Club in Rotary’s history) in the immediate aftermath of 9/11/2001. One key to Rotary is finding ways to help, some obvious and some creative, in any situation of need.
