From the online programs and real-world activities of the Rotary E-Club of The Greater San Fernando Valley, here are the best of the best!  Please feel free to argue, disagree, make your own choices from the 2013-2014 Rotary Year, or just enjoy the review.

TOP FIVE SKYPE SPEAKERS

1) Nancy and Tom Hardy (1 July 2013), recorded live from inside the House of Friendship at the RI Convention in Lisbon; July 1 program, recorded before the end of the previous year, but still the winner based purely on the unique nature of the venue: has any other Club in the history of Rotary ever, ever had its meeting’s guest speaker participate in the program from inside the House of Friendship at an RI Convention?

2) DG Karin Janzon (26 August 2013), live via Skype at our Fourth Sunday gathering, making an unofficial “official visit” to a Club outside of her own District, and coming to us past her bedtime live from her home in Sweden. Has any other Club in the history of Rotary ever, ever had a District Governor from a District on another continent be the guest speaker live at a local meeting thousands of miles away?

3) Vicky Tejerina (3 February 2014), recorded live from her home in Cordoba, Argentina; with no disrespect intended to our other two “exotic location” Skype interview guests, Vicky gets the nod because she conducted the interview in a non-native language. In addition, this interview was given full Spanish subtitles and viewed all over the Spanish-speaking Rotary world.

4 (tie) Joan MacFarlane (3 March 2014) and Kero O’Shea (6 January 2014), from Prince Edward Island in Canada and from Western Australia, respectively. We enjoyed learning about Rotary in their parts of the world.

TOP FIVE LIVE SPEAKERS

We had five, so they all tied for first place, with our gratitude…and in alphabetical order…here’s what we learned:

DG Doug Baker taught us about the fun and meaning of Rotary and the bigger picture during his official visit to our Club, and under the unique circumstances of this Rotary year, when Doug could not visit all 64 Clubs himself, his decision to include us among those he visited personally rather than sending a representative was a great privilege for us.

Diane Davis taught us about the many options for youth programs in the Rotary universe, from Rotaract to Interact to Youth Exchange to RYLA.

Will Hernandez taught us the meaning of our Food Drives in working with him and Valley Food Bank, as he painted a picture of the need and the gratitude on the other end of those donated cans.

Julie Jenkins taught us about how much progress we’ve made with polio eradication, but why WHO recently had to declare a crisis that reminds us why we must finish the job.

Greg O’Brien taught us about conflict resolution and peace and how Rotarians, and those we help by training in the field, can make a difference in the world.

THREE CRAZIEST ONLINE PROGRAMS

1) A Pre Earth-Day Tour (14 April 2014), because everyone loves satellite photos of Earth locations, especially the NSA.

2) Kickin’ It (16 June 2014), because if Americans are going to have to hear about soccer, we might as well have fun with it.

3) Magazines Everywhere (7 April 2014), because it’s fun to get Rotary friends in faraway lands to take silly photos of themselves holding a magazine.

  1. What a stellar year! I thoroughly enjoyed all of the meetings and events I was able to attend. I look forward to participating officially in the 2014-2015 year.

  2. It was a great year. A huge Thank You to Mel Powell for all the time and effort you put into producing interesting programs every week. And Thanks also to Yoko Matsui for your help with the programs, especially those with speakers.

I agree with all the top choices, and to Speakers, would add Ruth Frank, speaking about Polio. I found the interview with her to be among the most compelling. Go to the link to access the program, and scroll down the page to view the interview: http://wp.me/P1EHRD-EB

  3. You guys are tech savvy. I like the Skype meeting speaker and the interview in a non-native language with subtitles.

    Thanks,

    Melissa K. Dagodag

  4. I thoroughly enjoyed the 2013-2014 Rotary year with the E-Club. We are fun, hardworking and a little nutty – a perfect concoction for a service club!

Thank you all, especially President Sara, for your tireless hours of work to make it a successful year.

  5. It was a fabulous year! I look forward to an amazing 2014-2015 Rotary year!
