THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Our Rotary Club is based in a big city, Los Angeles. Even though the San Fernando Valley is only a portion of Los Angeles, with the Valley’s population of approximately 1.8 million it would rank, on its own, behind only New York, Chicago, Houston, and the rest of Los Angeles on the list of U.S. cities by population.

Inyo County, California, could fit its entire population, 18,467 by the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2013 estimate, into Staples Center for tonight’s Los Angeles Kings playoff game…and still leave some empty seats, and still have room in the arena for the players, coaches, arena staff, media, and the mascot (Bailey, who appears in one of our online programs for his community work, and we’re serious).

The legal issues that arise in a County are under the purview of the District Attorney. At our April Fourth Sunday Gathering on the 27th, our guest speaker was an old friend: Tom Hardy, the Immediate Past District Governor For Life of our former Rotary District 5260 (serving 2011-2012, the final year of that District). Tom now serves as the appointed District Attorney for Inyo County, filling the remaining term of the retired former DA, and is running unopposed for a full four-year term.

Tom visited with our Club live via Skype, and discussed a world alien to most of us in the big city–life and law in a very large (in area) but comparably small (in population) jurisdiction, reminding us that there are different worlds sometimes just a couple of hours away.

  1. I didn’t realize how little I know about Inyo County until this program. I found it fascinating that most of the land is owned by either the State or Federal governments, along with the City of Los Angeles. Nor did I realize that the County is so vast. Mel’s observation that the entire population of Inyo County would not quite fill the Staples Center, adds an interesting perspective, as well.

Most of all, we miss you Tom Hardy, and are grateful that you are our lifetime PDG!

  3. It was so interesting to learn about a county so different from ours… in size, demographics, population, topography, recreation, socio-economic status, etc. Tom did a fabulous job giving us a feel for life in Inyo County. We thank him for spending some time with us on Sunday via Skype, and hope to see him in person some time soon.

Tom, good luck on your next run as DA. They’re lucky to have you!
