THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Our Club’s 2016-2017 Rotary District 5280 Community Grant involves donating age-appropriate space science books to five San Fernando Valley schools, as well as one telescope each to the high school, the middle school, and the elementary school. The project is designed to inspire young people to look up and look forward.  The books were recommended by scientist Emily Lakdawalla of The Planetary Society, and if you haven’t seen her tour of the Solar System for us, visit the main Programs page on our website and check it out.

On the recommendation of astronomer, blogger, and science educator Phil Plait–who later learned of our project and acknowledged us on Twitter–we obtained the telescopes from a wonderful organization called Astronomers Without Borders. AWB was founded on the idea that here on Earth we are one people with one sky.

Their founder and President Mike Simmons was our special guest speaker for the Fourth Sunday Meeting on March 26, 2017.

We recommend that you open his presentation in a new window by clicking here (it’s a big file, give it a few moments to load) and move back and forth to follow along as he talks about sharing the wonders of the night sky (and sometimes the day sky!) with people around the world.

  3. It was great to meet Mike and learn about the resources that Astronomers Without Borders provide to people of all ages around the world. The pictures included in his presentation were moving and serve as a reminder of how we truly are one people under one sky.
