27 March 2017 — Mike Simmons, Speaker (live), Astronomers Without Borders

Effective July 1, 2016, by new Rotary International rule, Clubs must meet a minimum of twice each month, regardless of format (in person or online) or date/time. Accordingly, our Club has adopted a policy of two meetings per month, on a mid-month Monday at noon and the usual Fourth Sunday in-person meeting. If time and topic call for additional online Programs, we will be pleased to provide them.

SUNDAY, APRIL 23 — 12:30 pm to 2:00 pmOur FOURTH SUNDAY meeting for April! Speaker TBA. LOCATION: Denny’s Sherman Oaks, corner of Burbank and Sepulveda Boulevards. Board Meeting expected to happen this month, 11:15 a.m. before the main meeting.

Our Club’s 2016-2017 Rotary District 5280 Community Grant involves donating age-appropriate space science books to five San Fernando Valley schools, as well as one telescope each to the high school, the middle school, and the elementary school. The project is designed to inspire young people to look up and look forward.  The books were recommended by scientist Emily Lakdawalla of The Planetary Society, and if you haven’t seen her tour of the Solar System for us, visit the main Programs page on our website and check it out.

On the recommendation of astronomer, blogger, and science educator Phil Plait–who later learned of our project and acknowledged us on Twitter–we obtained the telescopes from a wonderful organization called Astronomers Without Borders. AWB was founded on the idea that here on Earth we are one people with one sky.

Their founder and President Mike Simmons was our special guest speaker for the Fourth Sunday Meeting on March 26, 2017.

We recommend that you open his presentation in a new window by clicking here (it’s a big file, give it a few moments to load) and move back and forth to follow along as he talks about sharing the wonders of the night sky (and sometimes the day sky!) with people around the world.

  2. So happy I didn’t have to miss this presentation (although always more enjoyable in person). I am excited by our new project and appreciate the comments, information and enthusiasm of our guest.

  3. It was great to meet Mike and learn about the resources that Astronomers Without Borders provide to people of all ages around the world. The pictures included in his presentation were moving and serve as a reminder of how we truly are one people under one sky.
