26 March 2012 — PRIP Cliff Dochterman on Building Stronger Clubs

MESSAGE FROM THE (PROVISIONAL) PRESIDENT

Who do you know around town who would be a great Rotarian and fantastic addition to our team?

OK, so we were off my one week…THIS week the Club’s Board will be meeting…a work in progress, as we learn how best to accomplish the administrative functioning of the E-Club…and by the end of the week we’ll be coming to the entire Club for a discussion of many of the issues as we continue our launch forward.

At the end of this week, Sunday, 1 April is upon us…and it’s no joke, it’s the First Sunday and time for our monthly gathering. Bring great people!

What’s a PRIP?  Past Rotary International President.  Few are more fun, more prolific in speeches and writings, and more beloved than Cliff Dochterman, who served as President in the 1992-1993 Rotary year.  A member of the Rotary Club of Moraga, in Northern California, he is also one of the funniest Rotary speakers around.  A sampling of his one-liners, recited here from memory and not looked up online:

“I met a guy coming out of a Rotary event and he said to me, ‘I heard your last speech.’  I said I wasn’t sure it was gonna be my last speech, and he said, ‘Well, it ought to be.'”

“Past RI President Rick King is the greatest speaker in Rotary.  Just ask him.”

“I asked my wife if I really look 80 years old.  She said no.  But you used to.”

Past President Cliff wrote the Book on Rotary’s ABCs.  No, really, he did.  Here it is as a PDF, and we highly recommend it–save it, read it, refer to it, enjoy it.

While Past President Cliff is usually very funny, he can also lock you on the edge of your seat with his deeply sincere thoughts about how Rotary can become stronger.  In this speech, uploaded by a European Rotarian some time ago in three parts (total of about 20 minutes), Cliff tells the assembled District Governors-Elect, during the 2008 International Assembly in San Diego, California, how they can help their Clubs grow and thrive when they begin their terms just six months later.

Although directed to incoming District Governors, President Cliff’s words can resonate with us as we use his ideas to grow our team to 25 (and an official charter!) and beyond.

  1. Wow what a take away. First the ABCs of Rotary and now the best presentation on growing and maintaining Rotary membership I have ever seen. I will be sending others to you for this session.

  2. Drew, if there’s anyone better than PRIP Cliff, it’s a very short list…!

  3. The speaker had good ideas for a 21st century Rotary Club. We’re already on our way with an “e-club”.

  4. What a charming speaker with many great ideas.

  5. Cliff is the best…tons of fun, and contagious passion for Rotary and what we can do. Maybe we can watch one of his full “funny” speeches someday…Rotary Movie Night!
