Rotary Fellowship of the Week for 24 October 2011

Rotary Fellowships are autonomous, international groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses, and Rotaractors who join together to share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities (sports, hobbies, etc.); further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession; make new friends around the world; explore new opportunities for service; and have fun and enhance their Rotary experience.

Our Rotary Fellowship of the Week is Antique, Classic and Historic Automobile World Fellowship of Rotarians (ACHAFR), information from our friends Colin Weeks (Chair of the International Fellowship) and Joanne Pistorius (Chair of the North American chapter, known as Antique, Classic and Historic Automobile Fellowship of Rotarians–North America):

What is the name of your Fellowship?

COLIN: “Antique, Classic and Historic Automobile World Fellowship of Rotarians.” JOANNE: The North American Chapter is known as ACHAFR: Antique, Classic & Historic Automobile Fellowship of Rotarians- North America (without the “world” included in the chapter name). We service USA, Canada and Mexico.

Who is the current Chair?

COLIN: “I am current President (In European Countries the Chair person or Voorsitter is just the person who controls the Meeting – a role that is not required in an organisation that mainly communicates by e mail). My Club is the Rotary Club of Ripley and Send (UK).” JOANNE: “I am the President of ACHAFR-NA. My home club is the Rotary Club of Tampa-Hyde Park (Florida, District 6890).”

How long has your Fellowship been recognized as official by RI?

Since 1992; the North American Chapter re-chartered in late 2009.

What are the dues to join?

COLIN: “These vary by Country; I will leave Joanne to answer this for USA. Local Chapter dues provide each member with membership of the international Fellowship.” JOANNE: “ACHAFR-NA Membership fee of $50.00 for the 1st Year (which includes a brass grill badge for the car and a lapel pin), $25.00 for renewal years, or $200 for a Lifetime Membership or a Club Membership.”

What is your mission?

The Antique, Classic and Historic Automobile world Fellowship of Rotarians (ACHAFR) is an international association of Rotarians dedicated to promoting the preservation and utilisation of antique, classic and historic automobiles as an opportunity for fellowship and service.

How do our eClub Members and Rotarian visitors find you on the web or by e-mail?

JOANNE: “For North American E-Club Members, by going to www.achafr.com or by e mailing joanne@transflor.com.”

What else do you want our E-Club Members, Rotarian visitors, and guests to know about your Fellowship?

COLIN: “We have over 400 Members from 26 Countries and organise at least one International Fellowship Tour a year. We fully support local events organised by various Rotary Clubs who raise an estimated $1M per year for local and International purposes. We also have great fun!”  JOANNE: “We have attended the last 2 RI Conventions with antique vehicles. In 2010 Montreal we drove a 1930 Packard over 4,000 miles from Florida to Canada and back again visiting Rotary Clubs every day. We hosted a dinner in the historic district of Montreal for our members. In 2011 we went to New Orleans convention with a 1908 Buick and toured around the French Quarter in it. We hosted a Cajun Cookout in the French Quarter, with live entertainment and fresh beignets from Café DuMonde. We will be distributing a new booklet to members ‘How to Put on a Car Show, Rally and Tour.’ We are also offering Club Memberships, if an entire Rotary Club wants to join our Fellowship and perhaps put on a Car Show as a Fundraiser, this Fellowship would be just the kind of support they would need.”
