24 February 2014 — Greg O’Brien, Speaker: Peace, Conflict Resolution, and Mediation

EXCITING CLUB NEWS!

The Rotary E-Club of The Greater San Fernando Valley is thrilled to welcome our newest member of the family, JoAnne Catran. JoAnne, sponsored by Club President-Elect Linda Catran—her sister, displaying the best form of nepotism—was inducted into our Rotary Club during our monthly Fourth Sunday gathering on 23 February 2014, in a ceremony conducted by Past District Governor Nancy Schmidt, also a charter member of our Club.

Welcome, JoAnne!

As we close out the month of February, designated World Peace and Understanding Month in Rotary, we learn about concepts of peace building in the world, and how Rotary can and does help.

Judge Gregory O’Brien, Jr., served nearly 20 years with the Los Angeles Superior Court, and since retiring from the bench has been a guest lecturer in law schools, an instructor for continuing legal education for lawyers and judges, and a mediator and arbitrator. He is a Past President of the Rotary Club of West Covina and, more recently, of the Rotary Club of Palos Verdes Peninsula. He was also recently named the District Governor Nominee Designate, to serve as Rotary District 5280 Governor in 2016-17.

Greg led a Rotary-sponsored team (with one other Rotarian and three non-Rotarians, all in the field of mediation) to attend the international conference of Mediators Without Borders in Istanbul, Turkey, in the fall of 2013. Greg was kind enough to share the experience with us during our Fourth Sunday Gathering in The Fireplace Room at Denny’s in Sherman Oaks, California, on 23 February 2014.

  1. It was a fun meeting at Denny’s as usual, with a very informative topic by the guest speaker. With so many conflicts and disputes arising all over the world with issues much more sensitive and complicated than ever before, I feel that mediation is an area that every Rotarian should look into and be trained on in near future.

    Welcome to the Club, JoAnne!!

  2. It was exciting to learn what Rotary is doing through Conflict Resolution and Mediation around the world. This is definitely an effective process toward peace… great to hear that teams of experts, Rotarian and non-Rotarian, are recruited to do this very important work. Impressive!

JoAnne, we love having you in our club! You bring so much with your rich background and interest areas. Can’t wait to serve together!

  3. Greg did a great job telling about the mediation conference in Turkey. I especially liked the option to get trained in the US in mediation skills. It is an example of the great opportunities that come through Rotary. I plan to pursue this training in one of my future visits to the LA area.
