19 January 2015 — MLK, Jr.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

On Sunday, January 18th, in observance of the 2015 National Day of Service, which takes place each year on Martin Luther King Day, and as part of its monthly E-wareness program, the Rotary E-Club of the Greater San Fernando Valley held its first ever Community Blood Drive and Bone Marrow registration. Held at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School, with the help of its exceptional Interact Club, and operated by the amazing staff at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) and Be the Match Bone Marrow registry, and in conjunction with the LA Kings Care Foundation, it was an inspiring day of service.

We greatly appreciate all the donors, and prospective donors, who showed up with arms outstretched. We had ambitious goals for this event and, while the blood donations were lower than we hoped, the Blood Drive successfully contributed enough blood to help nearly 100 children at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)! Many thanks to all the E-Club Rotarians, and friends who publicized and promoted the Blood Drive and Bone Marrow registry, and a special thanks to those who worked hard to repeatedly overcome obstacles to make this event happen.

A huge thanks to CHLA for setting up, staffing and running the Blood Drive, and also to Meagan, Keegan & Nick, from the LA Kings Ice Crew, who not only showed up in support of the event, but also donated a pint of blood and signed up for the Bone Marrow Registry. Check out the photos on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/rotaryeclubgreatersfv)!

It was a great start to another year of meaningful service by an incredibly dedicated team of Rotarians.

Linda Catran
President, 2014-2015

THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This week, in part with an apology from the Programs Chair, who is coming out of a too-busy but rewarding weekend and into a too-busy Monday, we repeat a program from a year ago.  In fact, from exactly a year ago.

Then again, it is difficult to contemplate apologizing for putting the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in front of ourselves again.  The value of his words remains high, and often feels like becomes higher every day.  That’s not the trend we want to pursue. Perhaps as Rotarians and friends we should continue to work for the day when his his words of hope for the future are words of description in the present.

No audio or video.  Just a chance to read, and soak in, one of the more famous orations in history, posted on this United States holiday dedicated to the memory and good works of a great person.

Please remember to vote in the “poll” at the bottom of the page, to let us know you visited this week.  We know it may be tough to find any words to “comment” that could follow Dr. King’s words.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?” — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
