11 July 2016 — Why We Eat Unhealthy Food

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We’re 11 days in to the new Rotary year and already have a Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind birthday visit under our belt and two more planned for July. It’s an easy and fun project and very fulfilling to see the birthday celebrant’s face light up when they realize why we are there. If you haven’t had a chance to visit a TLC group home please consider joining us for a future birthday visit. We will be continuing this project through December 2016.

Our first One More Item Food Drive of the year will be held on August 7 at the Gelson’s in Sherman Oaks. If you haven’t already signed up for a shift, please contact Daniele at ellipsis27@yahoo.com.

Mark your calendar for our Seventh Annual Dance For the Children on Saturday, September 24. Start thinking about who you may know who would like to be a Main Sponsor ($500) and Corporate Sponsors ($50) (payable to our Club), plus in-kind donations of snacks. Also remember, it’s never too early to start gathering your personal sponsors (donations payable to The Rotary Foundation and tax deductible).

See you all on July 24th for our Fourth Sunday meeting!!

NOTE

Effective July 1, 2016, by new Rotary International rule, Clubs must meet a minimum of twice each month, regardless of format (in person or online) or date/time. Accordingly, our Club has adopted a policy of two meetings per month, on a mid-month Monday at noon and the usual Fourth Sunday in person meeting. If time and topic call for additional online Programs, we will be pleased to provide them.

We eat a lot of foods that aren’t good for us.  And we can’t seem to stop.  It is part of having created a national and in many cases world-wide crisis of poor health and increased costs as a result.

In this interesting and informative TED Talk at a November, 2015 “Ted Med” event (focusing on medicine and healthcare under the general umbrella of TED talks, UCSF School of Medicine Professor Laura Schmidt discusses why we can’t stop the bad habits…but what we can do about it.

The videos on the Ted Med webpage do not seem to have an “Embedding” code so please click the link below to open a new page and view the talk, as well as a bio of this interesting and expert speaker, on its own page.
